Is it possible to import a inadmissible car in parts and assemble it yourself and register it as a “custom”?
Sunday, September 16th, 2007I am in Canada, and there are several cars that I have come across in the US and Japan that I cannot bring into my country and register. For example, I am not able to register a Lancer Evo, VW R32, Nissan Skyline, etc. unless the car is 15 years old or older. Is it possible to import the car’s body and engine seperately and assemble it myself and register it as a “custom”? The registrar for imported vehicles wouldn’t check admission on car parts, would they?

I understand emission laws need to still be met. But if the car where assembled and modified to meet emissions laws (if necessary), would it be possible?
Also, not all vehicles that are not Canadian-spec are restricted because of emissions. The company may simply choose not to sell them in the market, thus the registrar for imported vehicles would not know the specs firsthand.
